  1.                           HOW TO START

  4. The time to start your Organic Intensive Garden is in November when
  5. the normal garden season is over.
  6.  
  7. This time of year is convenient because the weeds have stopped 
  8. growing and the weather is cool enough outside so as not to `work up
  9. a sweat'!
  10.  
  11. No matter what you plan on planting next spring, the ground may be 
  12. prepared this November.  Now is the time to plant things like straw-
  13. berries.  Planting them now, the Organic Intensive way, will 
  14. guarantee plump red luscious strawberries early next summer.
  15.  
  16. The nice thing about Organic Gardening is, you don't have to worry 
  17. about having to take a bunch of chemical soil tests to make sure the
  18. soil is perfectly balanced.
  19.  
  20. To start, find a source of manure, for country folk, cows, chickens,
  21. horses, or any farm animal type of fertilizer may be used.  If you
  22. don't have farm animals, give neighbors or acquaintances a call, they
  23. usually are glad to give the stuff away.  You may meet and make some
  24. new friends in the process!
  25.  
  26. People who live in town or the city may try the same method of 
  27. obtaining fertilizer or for the urban dweller, sterilized manure
  28. can be obtained at a nursery or hardware store, check the yellow 
  29. pages and call.
  30.  
  31. The amount of fertilizer needed for your garden will vary.  A good
  32. rule of thumb is 1 gallon of fertilizer for every square foot. Spread
  33. this on top of the unworked ground, (For the tiller lovers, the
  34. ground may be tilled first).  It doesn't matter how green (new) the
  35. fertilizer is, it will be setting all winter.  
  36.  
  37. Next sprinkle garden lime, about 1 cup for every 3 square feet.
  38.  
  39. After the lime has been spread the next step is to spread out the
  40. organic mulch.  This can be old hay, straw, grass clippings (a bagger
  41. on the lawn mower is nice for collecting clippings in the summer),
  42. shredded newspapers, leaves racked up from the lawn, anything
  43. which will start decomposing during the winter.
  44.  
  45. To find hay, or straw, try calling country folk the same way as
  46. searching for fertilizer.  For urban dwellers, you might `make a
  47. day of it', collecting the fertilizer and mulch you need, and enjoy
  48. a trip to the country!

  50. The mulch should be at least 6 inches thick.  Once the mulch is 
  51. spread out evenly, the next step is....order your seed catalogs and
  52. forget it until December!  (For a strawberry or asparagus bed, the
  53. soil will have to be worked first with a spade or tiller.  Plant 
  54. the dormant plants in the ground and sprinkle fertilizer around them,
  55. then cover with mulch for the winter).  The same principle that 
  56. applies to strawberries and asparagus would apply to any other plant
  57. with a dormant root system and top which dies back in the fall.

  59. December is when all the seed companies send their catalogs out.
  60. Now is the time to order your seeds for the garden next year.

  66. Once you get your `wish book' seed catalogs, remember you're planting
  67. in a small space.  Avoid the temptation of turning your little space
  68. into an harbor for exotic plants, unless that is your goal.  Usually,
  69. just buy your favorites, the ones you know you will use regularly.
  70. It is good to buy your sulfur for acid-loving plants and some 
  71. Rotenone/Pyrethrin or Sabadilla, some powdered Kelp, powdered Garlic
  72. and other powdered herbs ahead of time.  HERBAL INSECTICIDE 
  73. DETERRENTS can be obtained by returning to the Main Menu and choosing
  74. the chapter on HERBAL INSECTICIDE DETERRENTS.
